Harvard University

Mark your calendars for the Fourth Annual Council Merit Badge University to
be held on March 11 and April 8 at Harvard University. The program will
begin at 8:30 am and be over by 1:00 pm, and attendance on both days is
required. The cost of registration is $15 per Scout. Included with the fee
are three merit badge pamphlets, a patch, and a “Harvard” diploma.

Registrations will begin February 6 at 7pm online at
http://www.meritbadgeuniversity.org/boston/register.htm

Many different merit badges will be offered by a combination of Harvard
students, faculty, and council volunteers. We like to offer badges that
Scouts would not normally have the opportunity to earn.

Scout Shabbat and Scout Sunday

In February and March it is traditional for American Scouting units to celebrate Scout Shabbat and Scout Sunday. Several such events are scheduled in Lexington. On Friday, February 17 at 8:15 pm, Temple Isaiah will welcome all Scouts (Jewish or not) to their services. Please come in Class A uniforms as complete as possible. Gini Shevrin, the Committee Chair of Troop 119, would like all Scouts to meet just inside the side doors of the Temple at about 8 pm and sit together. Cookies and juice are served after the services, which generally end around 9:30. If you plan to attend please contact Mrs. Shevrin at “gshevrin -at- gmail -dot- com”.

On Sunday, March 12, Hancock United Church of Christ (home of Troop 119 and Cub Scout Pack 137) welcomes all Scouts (Christian or not) to their Sunday morning service, at 10 am.

Also on Sunday, March 12, St Brigid Church (home of Troop 160) will have Scout Sunday at 11:30 am. 10 am (UPDATE: note time change).

Scout Sunday was already held at Plymouth Congregational Church in Belmont on February 5. Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts jointly helped with the service. When the minister asked for Scouts and Scout leaders to stand, 100% of the choir and 80% of the congregation stood up!

Summer Camp Spoke Program

Here is the latest information on the new SPOKE Program for Scouts who are at least 14 years old. PLEASE NOTE that the program is limited to 20 Scouts per week (for the entire camp) and is first come first serve. The sooner we register, the better. Please respond to this email ASAP if you are interested so we can figure out our next steps. We can reserve spaces with a $25/scout deposit, but I will need to get the deposits in ASAP and the balance will still be due on March 2.

In the new SPOKE program, campers will go on two overnight treks throughout the week that will take them to the far reaches of the reservation and beyond – like spokes of a wheel. These spokes reach areas of beautiful and memorable sights that are not accessible to the average camper. Between each SPOKE trek, participants will stay with their troops in camp and share their experiences with the scouts and leaders. Then wrap up the week with an IRONMAN TRIATHALON including running, biking, and swimming all over camp!
