Sign-up Reminder–The Ipswich River Canoe Trip

Reminder–The Ipswich River Canoe Trip happening on Saturday and Sunday June 3rd and 4th.

We will be paddling down the Ipswich River, camping at the Audubon Sanctuary’s Perkins Island campground and paddling out Sunday morning. The trip is for all paddlers of all abilities. All troop adults and all Scouts are invited. The Troop will provide canoes, paddles, PFDs and the usual camping equipment. There will be time for some Canoeing Merit Badge instruction for anyone interested.

If there is enough interest, we will have a second wave leaving in the afternoon for those more experienced Scouts who are taking the SATs in the morning and for those who might be recovering from the Sophomore Cruise.

Please sign-up at the end of the meeting on Thursday if possible. Mr. Dixon will be there to take forms and checks. Forms and checks can also be mailed to Mr. Dixon’s home.

Questions? Ask Andy Dixon, by phone or email (andrewtdixon -at- gmail -dot- com), or at the meetings.

Paul Gilbert receives Good Scout Award

At the Flintlock District Dinner in April, Assistant Scoutmaster Paul Gilbert received the Norman A. Norton Good Scout Award. This award is for long-term contributions to Scouting, both locally and within the district. This award is a pretty big deal, and measures contributions over decades, not just years. Paul is in excellent company — Scoutmaster Emeritus Gerry Abegg received this award last year.

Congratulations, Paul!

Two service opportunities

Here are a couple of service opportunities–one of which comes up every year and one of which comes up twice a year. Troop 119 and Troop 160 both support these events.

Friends of Cary Library Book Sale, Thursday May 18

The first is help moving books for the Friends of Cary Library Gently Used Book Sale. We have done this at least three times already and once we had to bail out the Girl Scouts. The Friends of Cary Library are very grateful for the help and mention you in the newspaper and in their newsletter. This morning I attended a Trustees meeting where the head of FOCL said that “We could not put on this book sale without the help of the Boy Scouts.” The financial assistance that FOCL gave the library last year was more than $7,000, most of which came from the two book sales so your labor is helping to keep Cary Library up to date.

Anybody that wants to help should meet this Thursday evening at 5:30 PM (yes, if you have to come later, you can). We will then use carts and the elevator to move about 7,000 books from the storage room to the sale area. FOCL always thinks it will take at least four hours and then we do it in about an hour.

As a reward, the Friends will serve pizza in the library. Yes, you get to eat in the library.

We should be through in plenty of time for us all to walk to our meetings. Adults are welcome, by the way. And if a Scout sees a book he particularly wants, the Friends will probably let him have it.

The more Scouts, the better, so try to make it. Thursday at 5:30 PM. Meet by the door to the Childrens Section near the parking lot lobby of Cary Library. See you there.

Memorial Day Parade, Monday May 29

We always march in this one. This year it will be on Monday, May 29th. As always, we will help lay wreaths. At least one Scout is needed at 8:45 AM to go on the bus to Westview Cemetery to lay wreaths there. Show up at the School Administration Building, also known as the White House, which is next to the Police Station on Mass. Ave.

The rest should show up no later than 9:30 AM at the School Administration Building. Wear Class A’s.

If it rains, we will gather for an indoor ceremony at the National Heritage Museum.

This is a very important event–something Boy Scouts have been helping with since the end of World War II–so try to find time for it.

Two Canoe events, May 13 and June 3-4

Canoe Merit Badge Training: This Saturday, May 13, from 10:30AM to 1:00PM at the Old Res. We will have canoes, paddles, PFDs , actual experts, fun activities. Consider being prepared to get wet.

The Canoe Camping Trip: Saturday, June 3rd and Sunday, June 4th. Meet at the church at 8AM Saturday. Load-up and drive to the Ipswich River, paddle the beautiful Ipswich River to the Audubon Society’s Perkins Island, make camp, have diner and a Campfire. Sunday, paddle out; home by early afternoon. Paddlers of all skill levels are welcome, adults included. If you have a canoe, it is welcome as well. There will be sign-up forms available at the next few meetings. All participants must have passed the BSA 100 yard swim test, last year at Camp is OK, but the Troop will make sure there is another opportunity to take the test before the trip.

Questions? Ask Andy Dixon, by phone or email (andrewtdixon -at- gmail -dot- com), or at the meetings.

Victims needed, May 20

The following was sent to us by Rob Sheridan, father of a Troop 160 Scout, who is working on this exercise:
VICTIMS NEEDED

We are in need of victims for our Field Training Exercise. If anyone has access to scout troops (boys or girls), we need 18 – 24 people. Scouts can meet their requirements for their Emergency Preparedness badges!! Other volunteers are also encouraged to participate! Must be 10 years old or older.

Volunteers need to be at the Bedford VA Hospital site 21 Industrial Way, Wilmington (UPDATE: Note change of location) on Saturday May 20 @ 2:00 PM for moulage. The drill will take place @ 4:00 PM. Volunteers should wear old clothes that may become permanently stained or torn.

Let me (dkissin -at- suscom-maine -dot- net) know.

Come one, come all!!!! A fun time is guaranteed for all!!!!!!!
Also, if people know of a theatrical troupe or drama class that is in need of practice of their art, they would make very good victims as well!! Scour your neighborhoods for victims!!!

Thank you!!!!!!!
