Scouts and Parents–

When we planned the final meeting of the year, we knew it was Flag Day, but we also knew that the ceremonies on the Battle Green were going to start at 6:00 PM which would not interfere with our own start time of 6:30 PM at the Old Res.

Unfortunately, we were thrown a big curve when the sponsors of Flag Day woke up very late last week and scheduled the ceremonies for 7:00 PM - 7:30 PM on the Battle Green. The Boy Scouts always go to Flag Day ceremonies so this was something of a setback. I got a hint of this on Friday, but did not get the official word until Saturday.

In the mix is the fact that we expected to have many late arrivals as people came from games, banquets, and all the rest of the things we do at the end of the school year. So the Flag Day ceremony just sort of sat there in the middle making a mess of things.

The late notice from the Flag Day sponsors has thrown the same curve to Town government as well. As I write this, I have no idea who will be there which will make it all the more important that the Scouts show up. We may even have to actually help raise the flag. That is not certain, but it is possible.

I would love to have a cookout on the Battle Green, but that is not allowed and there is still that timing issue …

After trying to work out some alternative which would allow us to do everything, I have reluctantly come to the conclusion that we cannot. Here is the revised plan.

6:50 PM Those who can gather at the Battle Green. Have your supper at home.
7:00 PM Flag Day ceremonies
7:30 PM Return to St. B’s for dessert. (Life is short–eat dessert first)
8:00 PM COH at St. B’s. Outside if possible.

The dessert and soft drinks will be provided, but if you want to contribute some special dessert, feel free.

So–the bottom line is: Battle Green for Flag Day ceremony. Dessert and then a COH outside RFK Hall where we usually meet. We will skip the Old Res for this year.

For those who have not been to a Court of Honor–all Scouts who have advanced in rank or earned merit badges or other awards will be recognized. New Scouts who have advanced to Tenderfoot will receive their official neckerchiefs. Parents are urged to attend.

I hope this does not inconvenience anybody. Try to make it to Flag Day ceremonies. This is one of those events which helps introduce us to the town.

Not everybody will read this e-mail so network liberally. Call others in the troop. Make sure they know.
