White Mountains Campout 2007

UPDATE 10/10/07: See pictures from the White Mountains campout in the Troop Gallery

The information and permission forms for the trip are available here. There is one form for scouts and one for adult volunteers. Please note, this is for the Columbus Day Weekend trip, NOT the upcoming backpacking trip.

This trip is a bit different from our typical campouts, because the scouts travel from the base camp in Thornton, NH (my house) to various hiking and climbing activities. The scouts break into smaller groups for their selected activity. We need adults to provide transportation and participation for each activity. It also “takes a village” to transport the scouts and gear from Lexington to the White Mountains and back home again. The troop really needs a lot of adult participation for this trip.

Here’s a quick outline of the weekend:

  • Saturday, October 6:
    • drive up to NH and set up camp
    • lunch at the house (everyone brings their own bag lunch)
    • drive to different trailheads for warm-up hikes
    • return to the house for dinner
      • scouts prepare dinner by patrol
      • adult dinner is prepared in the house (we ask non-participating adults to help out by providing dinner trays – see below)
    • evening campfire
  • Sunday, October 7:
    • breakfast is prepared in the house and served by the adults
    • scouts break into groups, selecting their preferred activity
      • activities include moderate hikes, a more challenging hike and rock climbing at Rumney Rocks (if there is sufficient interest and adult coverage)
      • the hikes typically include one or more of the 4,000 footers, with the specific selections determined at the house
      • trail lunch is prepared and distributed at the house
    • return to the house for dinner, same drill as Saturday
    • evening campfire
  • Monday, October 8:
    • breakfast is prepared in the house and served by the adults
    • break down camp
    • hike to Pemigewasset River (1 mile through woods)
    • return to the house, pack up and head home
    • stop on the ride home for “fast-food” lunch (everyone brings their own money)

SCOUTS: Please reply to me (not “reply all”) if you are interested in rock climbing.

  • Turn in your permission slips and money at the Thursday troop meeting on September 20
  • For the older scouts, note that the SATs are being administered on October 6

ADULTS: Please reply to me (not “reply all”) if you will be able to provide transportation and participate in the weekend. For the BSA permit, please include:

  1. the kind, year and make of your vehicle
  2. number of passengers
  3. owner’s name and
  4. driver’s license number

Please reply if you will be able to provide a dinner tray. Also, please give a general description (i.e., pasta dish, salad, …) so we can buy whatever else we need to have balanced meals.

ANYONE: Please reply to me if you have any questions.

Yours In Scouting,
Alan Simpson
