Columbus Day/White Mountain Camping Trip

This is a reminder that sign-ups for the White Mountain camping trip are due this Thursday, Sept. 18.  The trip will be Oct. 11 – 13 (Columbus Day weekend).  Camping will be at Moose Brook State Park, Gorham, NH.  Attached is the sign up sheet for anyone who didn’t get one at last week’s meeting.  This promises to be a great trip, with a variety of hikes to choose from in the northern Whites.

Responses to question about bikeway plowing

I sent a note out about plowing the Minuteman Bikeway during the winter figuring that many Scout parents are as active as the Scouts in the family.

I got 12 responses.  10 were in favor of plowing.  One was opposed to plowing.  One suggested plowing half and leaving half for other uses.

Those who favored plowing tended to cite the following reasons:
 Safe route to school for some students
 Good place to exercise in the winter when the sidewalks are congested and the roads are narrowed by snow and ice
 Commuter route in the other three seasons–why not allow it to be used that way in the winter
 There are many other places to ski and snowshoe
 A day or two after snow has fallen, the bikeway is no longer good for winter sports because many people walk on it even with the snow, so might as well plow and make it useful for more people

The half-and-half idea has come up before, by the way.  It was rejected by Arlington and Lexington advocates as inviting accidents on an already narrow bikeway.

The cost of plowing is projected at under $4,000 which is a tiny fraction of the snow removal cost for a winter.  Controls would be put in place to keep it from going any higher by capping the number of times it could be plowed, but reserving one last plow after the probable last snow of the season to get the bikeway back in shape faster after that last storm.

This summer I happened to be in Stowe, VT where there is a similar bike trail.  Part of the pitch for that trail when it was created was that it would be a bike trail in the summer and the centerpiece for recreational skiing and snowshoeing in the winter.

It has been pointed out that money spent to plow our bikeway might be better spent on bikeway maintenance.  It is obvious that our bikeway is more than due for some serious maintenance.  Most bikeway maintenance, by the way, is done by volunteers via the Bicycle Advisory Committee or the Friends of the Lexington Bikeway.  FOLB is always on the lookout for donations so if you have any spare cash …  A good place to find out about the bikeway and those who support it can be found at http://www.hbingham.com/lexbike/index.htm

You will find that many bikeway supporters are active in other outdoor organizations and have been effective in working with the state and town.  All those new bike racks in town, for instance, arrived free via a grant from the state and some hard work by volunteers.

No decision has yet been reached on the plowing.

Thanks to all who responded.

Troop 160 Camporee Sept 19-12 due This Thrusday

Hi all,

Thursday is the big day.  The camp sheets are due to me so I can tell
the folks who run the thing how many people we will be having.  So
please ask you son to give his completed form to me so I know he is
going.  To make it easy, I am attaching the form.

I have gotten some questions so here are the questions (FAQ’s) and
answers:

Note: If you scout does not have some camping gear, that should not stop
him from going on the trip.  Many people have stuff to loan out and also
scouts can share.

1) Q: What should my scout bring?  A:  The scouts will be going over
what to bring on a backpacking trip in the troop meetings before the
camporee.  The scouts will also get a packing list.  I will make sure
that a list gets emailed out no latter than after next weeks meeting
(Sept 11)

2) Q: Regarding single-burner stoves:  how many do we need to bring?
One per scout?  One per 3 or 4 scouts?  One per patrol (from our
troop)?  How exactly will they be used during the event?
A: The patrols will be cooking their meals on the stoves so we will
likely need 1 or 2 per patrol.  If you have a stove that can be loaned
to a patrol, please email me.  Also please plan on bringing it to the
next weeks troop meeting (Sept 11) so we can verify it works and train
others.  If you do not have a stove, don’t worry we will get enough.

3) Q: There was some uncertainty about whether this would be like a
“real” backpacking trip, or whether boys would be making multiple trips
in from the parking area.
A: This is a backpacking-oriented trip and boys should plan on
packing all their gear in their pack.  It will be only about a half mile
and fairly flat.  This is very minimal and would be a good warm-up for
the White Mountians group that wants to backpack in.  Again this is a
SMALL part of the weekend and should not be a showstopper.  If you do
not have a back pack, or have an extra, please email me.  You DO NOT
have to buy a backpack.  The troop has some and T119 has a bunch I will
check into borrowing.

4)  Q Does this mean no patrol boxes for the event  A: Yep!

5) Q: will water be available at the actual camp site or will it need to
be carried in?  A: This is over my pay grade and I will have to find the
answer.

*********  Please have your scout go on this trip.  It will be a lot of
fun.  It is two night and the kids will have a blast!!!

********  Please email me if you have / need stoves, light tents, or
backpacks

Hope to see everyone Thursday.

Photos from summer camp 2008

At least 50 more pictures have been added to the summer camp slideshow available at:

http://albums.phanfare.com/5069384/2528843_2753030#imageID=43290042

There is also a new soundtrack which has a dozen or so Scouts talking about their experiences during camp this year and last.  There is a funny part about cakes bursting into flames, but that did not happen this year.

Just in case you missed my earlier e-mails, you can view them all simply by clicking on View Slideshow or you can click through them one by one.  Should you want to have copies of some of the photos for yourself, you can either download a high-res image or you can send them to any one of several printing services.

If your connection to the Internet is relatively slow, the show may pause now and then to load pictures.  If your connection is fairly fast, it will show without pauses.  There are more than 180 photos in the show so it is a good look at what we did at camp.

If you have other pictures of camp this summer, let me have ‘em so I can add them to the show.
