MEETING ACTIVITY FOR THIS WEEK
The famous 10-10-30 seems to be a popular activity so as announced last week, we are going to have one this week. Except it is now the soon to be even more famous … hold onto your hats …
5-5-30-4-1-1-1-1 (Entree)
What? Are you kidding?
The object is to:
- Feed 5 Scouts
- For $5 or less
- With a main dish made in 30 minutes or fewer
- Cooked with no more than 4 ounces of fuel
- With 1 liter or less of water
- Using no more than 1 pot
- To be served in 1 dish per Scout with one utensil per Scout to eat it with
The demonstration last week was a pasta dish. I don’t like pasta on camping trips because it tends to be messy, it takes a lot of water, it uses a lot of fuel, and the cleanup is tough. So I decided to show that you could get around these shortcomings. The pasta had been soaking in water for three hours so it was already soft. The water in which it had been soaking (in a Nalge) was used to heat the pasta. The sauce was put in a plastic heatproof bag and put in the hot water so it heated along with the pasta, but did not mess up the pot. Then the hot water was used to make cocoa and the small amount left was used to wash out the pot with a small amount of cold water to finish the job.
So five Scouts were fed a main dish which required almost zero cleanup. The personal eating gear was a cup and a fork. After the main dish, the cocoa started the “washing” of the cup with a small amount of hot and a small amount of cold water to finish the job. The pot wasn’t dirty and a very small amount of cold water washed out the starchy residue from the pasta.
Now we know that a meal is often more than just a main dish, so I served some crackers to go with it in place of bread. We could have done some vegetables along with it in another bag in the same water. Or right with the pasta. Many vegetables are not messy to cook.
So all the requirements for the challenge were met, I think.
You can use more water or more pots or more fuel, or you may spend more than $5, but it will cost you points.
So that is the activity for Thursday night. Yes, you will be reimbursed for the food you purchase. You can pick a meal–breakfast, lunch, or supper. But there is a degree of difficulty. Breakfast has a degree of difficulty of 1.2. Lunch has a degree of difficulty of 1.0. Supper has a degree of difficulty of 1.5. That means your raw score is multiplied by the degree of difficulty to get your final score.
This should be done by patrols!
See you all Thursday night!!!!!
