Eagle Courts of Honor for Troops 119 and 160

Troop 119 and 160 have SEVERAL Eagle COHs coming up.

Troop 160

Jon Wan.  Next Saturday (Discovery Day) at the Chinese Bible Church off of Spring Street on Old Spring Street.  Old Spring is just past the Rt. 2 overpass on Spring Street and just before the turn onto Concord Ave.  10:00 AM.

I realize this is a busy weekend, but if you have a few free moments, drop by.  Jon was Humor Central for our troop for many years.

Troop 119

Here is a note from Mr. Gunther about the COHs for his troop:

====================================
Dear Scouts,

Several of your fellow scouts have worked very hard over their scouting careers and have been awarded the rank of Eagle Scout.  Over the next month or so, we as a troop will be helping them recognize this achievement by holding Eagle Courts of Honor.  You will be receiving individual notices of these events and details will be posted on the troop web site. To help you out, here is a summary of the known plans.  The may change, so read the initiations carefully.  I hope you will join us for as many of these as possible.

Alex Duval – May 31 (Sunday, Hancock Church 2:30 pm )

Steven Leung – June 6 (Saturday, Hancock Church 4:00 pm)

Brian Shevrin – June 9 (Tuesday, Temple Isaiah 7:15 pm)

Chris Waters & Keith Goplerud – joint ceremony June 14 (Sunday, Hancock Church 3 pm)

Quite an achievement one and all!

Yours in Scouting,
Bernie Gunther

Service Opportunities

Here is a recap of service opportunities with one addition.

Let me know (REPLY, not REPLY ALL to avoid inbox congestion) if you have any interest in any of these.  For the book migration, don’t bother to reply–we always have a ton of Scouts and adults which is, of course, what we need.

All three of these opportunities are open to both 119 and 160 Scouts.

1. Help the Lexington Garden Club with setup for their plant sale.  These are the same people who used the mud room of the St Brigids Parish Hall for their holiday decoration work.  And then they really cleaned the place up afterwards.  Wow!  We were impressed–partly because of the decorations and partly because they are a lot tidier than Troop 160.  :-)

The Garden Club needs four Scouts total for a two-hour service opportunity right after school on Tuesday, May 19th.  Two Scouts are needed to help load some material at a private residence and two Scouts are needed for setup at the National Heritage Museum.  I will probably be at both locations for at least a short time.

The other two refer to my earlier Scoutmaster Minute.

The Great Book Migration 5/14/09

I normally warn a lot earlier than this, but a massive calendar crash made me electronically forget until a few minutes ago.

As most of you know, we always help out the nice people who run the Friends of Cary Library.  FOCL has a twice-yearly book sale and it is the Boy Scouts who move around 8,000 books from the storage areas to the sale areas.  To New Scouts, 8,000 volumes may seem like a lot, but we typically do the job in around 90 minutes.

So join me this Thursday to help move books.  This is a joint 119-160 operation, of course.  Officially we will start at 5 PM with pizza and soft drinks served not later that 6:30 PM.  That should put you at your Scout meeting well ahead of schedule.  If you can’t make it by 5, then come when you can.

So–this Thursday.  5 PM.  Pizza and soft drinks in the library.  Wear your uniform.  Class B or Class A–it doesn’t matter.  Team picture after the move.  Adults welcome.

Hope to see you there!

-Hank

A SCOUTMASTER MINUTE

OA Elections This Week
———————-

As most Scouts know, there is an organization within Boy Scouts called the Order of the Arrow.  Elections will be conducted at the meeting this week by a team from the local OA lodge.  For those new to Scouting they will go over the history and aims of the organization before conducting the election.  To be eligible you must be First Class and you must have had during the past two years 15 nights of camping with five of those nights coming from Scout camp.  The five-night summer camp requirement says that you must have at least five such nights, but no more than five of those nights at summer camp will be counted in the 15-night total.  So you need to have gone on at least 10 other trips where you stayed at least one night.

We have a short list of those eligible generated from Troopmaster–Sam W., Ian D., and Matthew Sh.  But there is always the chance that the records are incomplete so if you think you are eligible, please e-mail me so I can re-check the records and verify your eligibility.  And be sure to come to the meeting!

Service Opportunities
———————

Both of these opportunities are open to both 119 and 160 Scouts.

1. The Great Spring Book Migration.  The announced time is 5-7 PM this Thursday.  Meet in the lower level near the Children’s Dept.  Pizza and soft drinks will be served.  I need at least one adult, by the way, because I will be missing for half an hour or so.  We usually do get several adults, but just in case, let me know.

2. Run-of-the-Mill 5K Race help

I have pasted in a note from the race co-director who sent it to me a few minutes ago as I was sitting down to write this e-mail.  The one catch is that I cannot be there since I will be in Western Mass with family.

This is a fundraiser for Estabrook School, by the way.

===============================================

Hi Hank,

My name is Gretchen Reisig and I am the Co-Director of this Sunday’s 2nd Annual Run of the Mill, the Estabrook 5K.  We are looking forward to a great day again this year, but find ourselves in a bit of a bind as we are short on volunteers.  Any chance you could round up a few of the boy scouts to help us out?

We need people to staff the race course and to work the finish line, helping the timers.  We ask that the volunteers be at Estabrook no later than 10:20 and they will be finished by noon.  There is a post party with lots of free food and all volunteers get a free t-shirt (as well as community service points).

I realize this is very short notice, but anyone you could send our way would be most appreciated.  If you are able to find some help, please have them contact us at estabrook5K@gmail.com or they can call me directly at 617-407-9317.

Thanks in advance for your help.

- Gretchen Reisig

Scoutmaster Specific is the training for new Scoutmasters, Assistant Scoutmasters or anyone who is interested in learning how boy-run troops work. If you are transitioning from Cub Scouts, this course can help you learn how Boy Scouts work, and how to support boys in their efforts to run their program.
