Rifle Shooting Merit Badge

We had a tremendously successful morning at the Riverside Gun Club in Hudson today.  Eleven scouts were able to achieve their target shooting requirements and therefore finish all of their requirements for their Rifle Shooting MB.

The instructors gave the scouts over 3 hours of constant attention.  The rifles (I was told by the scouts themselves) were far superior to those rifles used at summer camp and therefore led to the high success rate today (even the quarters that we used to verify shot placement were real quarters)!!!  The shooting range was nicely set up to accomodate all of the scouts.  All told they shot over 1,000 rounds!

The scouts all personally thanked the instructors for their time, exhibiting the proper spirit of Troop 160.  Also, thanks to Peter Childs and Lynn Eriksen for joining me this morning in transporting scouts and staying the morning to assist with supervision.

Congratulations to:
Tim C. , Patrick F., Alex C.,  Cole O-L, Brady G., Dylan J. , Azeem S., Sam W., Ray S., Matthew Sh., Eliot W.

Support for the Walk for Dyslexia

I have said several times before that Scouting is respected in Lexington and that the record of service to the community is a large part of the reason for that respect.

Today I returned from training at Camp Sayre in time to go to the National Heritage Museum to see if anybody had showed up for the Walk for Dyslexia.  In fact, a small crowd of people had braved the elements.  Among them were six Scouts.

One of them told me that there wasn’t a lot to do.  In fact, there was enough to do in the way of setup and teardown to keep them busy, but showing up was the key.  The weather was terrible, but everybody there knew that the Scouts had showed up to help.

Thank you to all of the Scouts who were there.  Once again you have demonstrated that Scouting is alive and well in Lexington … and should be.

Service opportunity for the Walk for Dyslexia

We have in the past used the grounds of the National Heritage Museum and we would like to return the favor.

If Scouts or adults can help with their Annual Walk for Dyslexia this Sunday from 11-2, that would be great.  We will be doing things like staffing the water stops, helping with setup and teardown, etc.  There will be food!

If you come, wear a Class A shirt.  The event will go on rain or shine.

You probably want to come a bit before 11 to help with setup.  The Museum is at the corner of Marrett Road and Msss Ave.  Enter through the Marrett Road gate.  Pass the museum, than take a left and drive toward the Learning Center which is the building at the far end of the property.  They will probably have a tent set up.

Look for somebody in charge and tell them you are from the Boy Scouts and are there to help.

I will join you if I get back from my class at Sayre in time.

Service opportunity at Temple Isaiah on Sunday 10/25/09

Service opportunity …pls see details below………..Thx   John W

Dear Hank & John,

As we discussed last night, I would like to invite Troop 160 scouts to participate in community service at Temple Isaiah on Sunday, October 25. We need several scouts to help carry in donations for the annual Rummage Sale.  Many donations come in from older citizens, and they need help carrying things in from cars.  In the past several years, Troop 119 has provided this service – I would like to extend the opportunity to any boys from Troop 160 who might need service hours or who simply enjoy helping out.

The collection takes place from 9 am til 1 pm, on Sunday October 25.  As an added incentive, the volunteers always have an opportunity to ‘shop’ at the end of their shift, with some real treasures sometimes found.

Thanks for passing this along to the boys in your troop.  Interested kids should contact me at gshevrin@gmail.com.  Last minute participants can simply show up, but it will be helpful if we know how many kids to expect.

Thanks

Introduction to Outdoor Leader Skills (IOLS)

A major part of leader training is the IOLS portion of leader-specific training.  It is being held this coming weekend at Camp Sayre from 8:30 AM on Saturday until later morning Sunday.

I hear the staff is fantastic and you will probably recognize at least one of them if you take the course.

You can sign up on the Web site at www.bsaboston.org.  The cost is just $35.  By recharter time next year, ASMs will HAVE to have this course, so a weekend wisely spent now …  If you want to sign up, but can’t figure it out, talk to me.  There are still places in the class.

This course is open to all.  It is hoped that you have taken the introductory (and free), Web-based, courses, but I suspect they will let you in even without that.
