Request for help with Annual Battle Green Walk

The Masons sponsor an Annual Battle Green Walk to help children with dyslexia.  They have asked the Scout troops in town to help with water stations and other odd jobs. Some of you have done this before–I won’t mention our heroic efforts a few years ago to erect a balloon gateway at the start/end point when we rediscovered that in cold weather helium is not as effective a lifting agent as it is in warmer weather.  :-)

But we have been asked again this year for both Scout and adult volunteers to help out from 11 AM to 2 PM on Sunday, October 18th.  There will be a barbecue for all to which you will be invited, but even with that benefit, the troop will still award you service hours or we will sign off on LHS service hours.

Show up rain or shine!

But I need to be able to tell the organizer how many to expect so let me know if you are interested on Thursday at the COH or via return e-mail.  This is the sort of service project that benefits Scouting while we are helping others so I hope at least a few of you can show up.

2009 Cookeree is Nov 7th and 8th

Hi

The Troop 160 Cookeree will be held on Nov 7th and 8th at Camp Acton.  Please read the attached flyer / sign-up sheet for details (what, where, when, cost, and the permission slip).  Second year Webelos from all three packs in Lexington are invited to attend as well, along with their families.

Please reserve the weekend (or at a minimum Saturday evening) on your calendar now!

Please fill out the attached form with the number of folks attending from your family, and return the form / permission slip and a check or cash to Rich.  Any questions, please contact me.

Rich Foley …

We already have a number of volunteers helping us with this event, but we are always looking for extra hands, in particular:

Pie Men and Women -  folks to help with pie cooking in dutch ovens  (a good chance to learn if you haven’t done this before!)

Camp Setup – help w/ camp site setup (Saturday early afternoon) and cleanup (Sunday morning), especially getting and returning picnic tables

Side Dish Specialists – We need several volunteers to assist the scouts in preparing the “fixings”.

Pickup trucks – we need at least one truck to move picnic tables between camp sites

Food Shoppers -Someone to assist with the food run to Costco or BJ’s to purchase the bulk of the items required for the event.

Please let me know if you available to help out with any of these tasks.

Thanks!

Rich Foley

Food and electronics for the White Mountains trip

FOOD

Parents of Scouts who are going on the White Mountains hike may wonder exactly how the food is being handled.  The trip coordinator covered most of this in a posting you can review at:

http://www.troop160lexington.com/home/2009/10/08/white-mountains-campout/

Breakfast on Sunday and Monday will be provided as will a trail lunch on Sunday.  The Scout is responsible for his own lunch on Saturday.  For those returning on Monday in the early afternoon, we may stop for lunch along the way so allow a little pocket money for that.

Saturday and Sunday supper will be cooked by the patrols.  That means that the patrol plans the meals for their group, a grubmaster is appointed, and the grubmaster buys the food.  The food allowance for supper is $4 per Scout per supper.  If a grubmaster has any questions about how many are in his patrol, contact me.

In one case, a last-minute cancellation means we ended up with a very small patrol and to get quantities right they may have to overspend a bit.

ALL PATROL FOOD COSTS WILL BE REIMBURSED so next week the grubmaster should come to the meeting prepared to present his bills.  This reconciliation is part of the learning process so I don’t want anybody to skip this step.  We do NOT expect the grubmaster’s parents to donate the food.

ELECTRONICS

As with all troop events, Scouts should leave the electronics at home.  That includes cell phones.  If a Scout needs to make a call for some reason, there will be adults with cell phones for emergencies although they, too, will be buried in packs or deep in pockets.  There will be enough to do that electronic games, MP3 players, and the like will not be needed for entertainment.
