Winter Campout at Hidden Valley

Have attached a flyer and permisson slip for the Winter Campout in January.  Scouts will be reviewing cold weather camping techniques leading up to this trip.

Please see the Cold Weather Camping List on the Troop 160 website.  Boots should be large enough to fit at least 2 layers of HEAVY wool socks.  The boots with the removable felt liners work well.

Looking forward to a great trip!      Meg Bonnell-Bradley

Enjoy a fun skilled 2 hours of indoor rock climbing at one of the best gyms in New England.  Whether you are an avid climber or novice, you will be challenged!    All participatants will have many opportunities to belay and improve their skills for the low price of $15.00/scout. (New low price – was $20.00 last yr)

We will leave from St Brigid’s parking lot at 09:45am that Saturday (or meet you there – please note if you will drive or come with us).  I will bring the waiver forms to Woburn on December 12th.  Only scouts with the proper documentation will be allowed to climb.

This should be a fun 2 hours.  The Rock Gym manager has assured me that there multiple wall choices.  There are many difficult walls to climb to keep the more experienced scouts challenged.

I hope we have a great participation from our troop.  December can be a month of little physical activity – not enough snow and too little warm weather.  This will be a day you can sweat!

Thank you!

T160 white water rafting date – straw man poll

I’m working on setting the date for the Troop 160 white water rafting trip next spring, and I have two dates to choose from.  We will be going to Maine and rafting the Kennebec.  Boys who are 14 may get to raft the Dead River if there is enough interest.

I think this will be a really exciting trip and I’d like to make it so that as many as possible of the boys can make the trip, so I’m taking a (non-binding) poll to see if anyone has hard conflicts with either of these dates.

=> If you have a hard conflict with either of the dates, please type CONFLICT next to the date below and reply to me.
=> If you have no conflicts, you do not need to reply.

Date #1:  weekend before Memorial Day, May 22 – 23rd, 2010
Date #2: Memorial Day Weekend, May 29 – 30th, 2010

In either case, I am planning on leaving as early as we can (4pm?) on Friday for the 4.5 hour drive to Maine, rafting on Saturday, and coming back Sunday morning.  That will allow time for homework and other things on Sunday (and Monday of Memorial Day weekend).

Also, just a quick heads up on cost.  This is a more expensive trip; the troop will defer some of the cost, but it will be around $90/person.
I plan to set the date at the end of this week, so if you have feedback, let me know soon.

Thanks!
- Tad

The bandstand is lighted!

The bandstand is lighted and looks great!

Many thanks to the Scouts and adults who turned out to help.  This is the sort of Scout project that sends a really positive message to the town.  One person stopped by to ask who we were.  She knew elves did the work, but never knew where the elves came from.  :-)

BTW–for those who were there–the gate has now been repaired and the missing piece of siding has been temporarily replaced.  It will be repaired permanently sometime this week.

The lights are LEDs strings purchased last year by the troop with donations from the troop committee, several parents, and a company.  The tree is a gift from Alan Wrigley, a local attorney who has been a Troop 160 ASM for a long time.  Thanks to all!

So stop by and admire the sight.
