Philmont 2012

Hi all,

I have gotten a gauge of the level of interest in the Philmont 2012 trip.  It looks like we may only have enough scouts for a single crew (8 scouts and 2 adults).  If enough scouts show interest, we might be able to send two crews.  It is time to commit.

Time table for Philmont sign-ups:

Thur Feb 3 8:00pm – Parent informational meeting
Thur Feb 17 – $100 non-refundable deposits (payable to Troop 160) are due.  Bring to Troop meeting or mail to Jeff Shorter (address in Troop guide).

Notes:
1) if we have more scouts than can go on the trip, older scouts who have turned in the $100 deposit will have priority
2) if we have more scouts than can go, they will be selected by the order in which the deposits are recieved.
3) The scoutmaster will review the list and must approve of all scouts.

Opportunity to go “Caving”…..coordinator needed

Hello all;

“Caving”  is an activity requested by our scouts in last summers planning meeting at HV.

We’ve deteremined that there is an opportunity for a patrol or small group of scouts to go to a fairly well known “caving” spot in nearby Albany NY.   The time frame would be Mid March to late April.  It would be proably be  a one night overnight,  either camp out or most likely take advantage of a troop parents cabin in the nearby catskills.

We have access to some resources to provide some of the appropriate caving gear.   This e-mail is to solicit an adult volunteer in the troop who wishes to coordinate this event and make it happen.

If you are interested to take this on,  Please contact me via reply as soon as possible

Thx

To all:

Summer camp is just around the corner.   Below is a nice local opportunity to hear about it and ask questions to the folks who run the show.

If you are a parent with questions or a leader who plans to go to camp (or is thinking about going to camp), here is a great opportunity to get good info…..Click here .

Hastings bandstand light removal

I meant to announce this at the meeting last night, but my voice was going fast and I spaced it off.

With February just around the corner, we need to get the lights removed from the bandstand.  I will be there starting at 8:10 AM this coming Saturday.  If you want to help, come on down.  It should take no more than an hour.  We need to carefully remove the lights, coil the strings, then pack them in boxes.  We also need to remove the tree which I will take to Hartwell Ave on Monday.

We could just turn them off and wait for warmer weather, but I have found that if the lights are not on, we see increased vandalism.  The lights are a big investment so we need to protect them.

Of course you get service hours …

Meeting tonight for anybody tough enough to get there

I know–you had a day off and your Scoutmaster is recovering from a cold the size of a very large snowplow, but for those hardy Scouts who can fight their way through the cold and snowdrifts to the meeting place tonight, there will be a meeting.  This is the night we are supposed to build some new storyboards so bring a good pair of scissors if you have one.  There will be some cutting to do.  We don’t need a lot of scissors, but a few more than we have would help.  Patrols ought to have a communications chain in place–this would be a good time to test it.  And start thinking about what you would do if vital services were cut … like the Internet or the phone.  How would you get the word out?  Does the troop have a communications plan?  Does your patrol?  This would be a very good time to think about how you would create one.

We got around 10″ last night so this would be a good time to help out your neighbors with your trusty shovel.  There are many houses where the people who live there are not able to dig themselves out.  And there are even more where some extra help would be really appreciated.  So lend a hand.  Remember–I will give service hours for that kind of effort.

And don’t forget storm drains and fire hydrants.  Again–service hours will be given and I hear there will soon be a Web site where you can claim a hydrant or a storm drain.  Stay tuned.

Last–I have several requests for help with shoveling.  At the meeting tonight I would like to talk to anybody who would like to help out some people in need.
