I’ve had remarkably few positive responses for the June 24-26 trip to Nantucket (although I’ve gotten lots of “I’d like to go but can’t” responses), so I’m sending a second notice.

If you are planning to come, please let me know ASAP.

ADULTS: Because of the logistics of the truck, the ferry, and the biking, there needs to be at least 2 experienced adults on the trip besides me.
Also, the trip really needs to have a good number of participants for it to make sense to take the big truck on the ferry as we’ve planned.

Nantucket bound scouts,

Thanks to the sharp eye of Jeanne Hobbs, I realized that the times for the return ferry trip I listed in the earlier e-mail and flier (2:15 departure from Nantucket and 4:30 arrival in Hyannis) are for the reservations I’ve made for the truck, which needs to return on the freight ferry.

The passenger ferry, which the non-truck passengers can take, leaves Nantucket at 12:00 and arrives at Hyannis at 2:15. This means that most of the trip can return to Lexington about 2 hours earlier than previously thought (although I’ll need volunteers to unload the truck when it arrives).

Dear Troop 160,

Our Spring cycling/beach trip this year will be to Nantucket. We will be leaving on Friday June 24th (early enough to catch the 2:45 PM ferry from Hyannis), camping 2 nights at the Boy Scout camp in the middle of the island, and returning on Sunday June 26th (on the 2:15 PM ferry to Hyannis). On Saturday there are several options for biking and swimming, with the specifics determined by the scouts who are attending.

Attached is the information flier and permission slip. Please contact me when you’ve decided to attend this trip so I can plan.

Note that the departure and return times are not set yet, pending consultations with folks who know more about traffic to the Cape than I do.

ADULTS: I need an assistant trip coordinator who can be in charge of the Friday departure from St. Brigid’s (I may leave early with the truck). I’d also like an adult grubmaster to coordinate the adult food. Thanks for your help.

I hope to see you there,

Deep Freeze – 2011 Edition was awesome. Kudos to the scouts on their creative quinzee designs this year, most notably “ New York .” Just a few follow-ups:

THANK YOU

A big trip like this can’t happen without the help of many.

First of all, a big thank you to the Rolfsons for hosting us again. In addition to providing the perfect setting for winter camping and great company, the Rolfsons prepared the cabin for the adults and provided the pancake batter and maple syrup for our group breakfast on Monday. And the Maple Syrup tour on Sunday was terrific!

I would also like to thank all the adult volunteers whose presence and willingness to transport scouts and gear made this trip possible. We had 10 cars and vans and managed to transport everything back and forth without a single truck. Thanks also to the scout parents who provided food for the adult meals – it was excellent and much appreciated. And speaking of food, a special thank you to Arlene Marge and Lien Ho for coordinating the adult meals.

MISSING

Somehow, we managed to lose one of the troop’s gray snowshoes. I’m not sure how this could happen, because no one remembers seeing a scout or adult hopping around on a single snowshoe. If you remember taking out a pair of snowshoes and coming back with only one, please e-mail me.

FOUND

I have a bag of personal items that we found while cleaning up the campsite that you can see in the attached picture. The missing items are:

* Green bungee cord
* 1 Red wool sock
* 1 blue and gray Wright Sock
* 1 blue EMS knit cap
* 1 LL Bean headlamp
* Black Adidas wind pants with 2 blue stripes
* 1 pair black Polartec gloves
* 1 pair gray wool socks

If you recognize one of these as your own, please e-mail me.

Thanks again,
Charlie

Hello to all Troop 160 adults,

The final plans are coming together for the President’s Day Weekend Campout known as the “Deep Freeze.” As of last week, we had roughly 25 scouts and 10 adults planning to go. For anyone with a scout attending this activity, please review this information regarding meals.

Everyone brings their own bag lunch for Saturday and everyone will need money for a “fast food” lunch stop on the way home on Monday. Because of limited kitchen space in the cabin to prepare dinner for all of the adults, we are asking families to provide food (in nonreturnable trays) that we can warm up in the oven or serve directly (i.e., salad, bread, fruit, dessert) for the adult volunteers for both dinners. If you are willing to provide something, please let me know what you can offer, so we can plan the adult volunteer dinners accordingly. Please reply to me and not “reply all”.

Thank you in advance for your help.

Yours in scouting,
Charlie

Scouts: Challenge yourself during February vacation and brag about it for the rest of the year to your friends!

The Friday Hikers owe me a Firefly stove, one or two cooking pots, and the bag from the first stove which came back to me with the cook kit, but without the bag it went out in. Maybe the second stove is now in the bag? No hurry, but being the stuff back Thursday.

If an adult opens up the parish hall door at an odd time like after returning from a campout, then lock it immediately and open up the back doors into the basement. If the door is already open, fine, but if it is locked, then make sure it is locked as soon as you enter the hall so you don’t forget to do it.

It would be nice if White Mountain campers from this weekend came half an hour early to the next meeting to make sure cookware is clean and to roll tents. Much of the work of putting stuff away has already been done, but it would be nice to finish the job. The next meeting is a Court of Honor which is why you should come half an hour early.

Thanks to all the trip organizers for putting together a great trip, to the SPL and all the Scouts for doing a very good job all weekend, and to whoever ordered the weather for getting it just right. 30 degrees Saturday night, 35 degrees Sunday night, says my iButton. We should have taken a swim this morning, but as things worked out, the time was against us. The guys at the desk called me a few minutes ago to thank us for leaving such a clean campsite. Normally they have to clean it after each use. This time they didn’t have to do anything.
