Reserve the date now! Mark your calendars! The boys asked for it, and they’re getting it!

Troop 160 will be going white water rafting the weekend of May 22nd, 2010 in Maine.

Below are a few details to help you plan. These are NOT FINAL but are meant to give you an approximate idea of how the trip will run.

I will send out an official flyer with full details shortly.

Preliminary Details (DRAFT)

Where: Kennebec River (for boys 10 years or older), with an option to go on the Dead River for boys who are 14+. The Dead River is more challenging – see the website for details.

Outfitters: we will be using North Country Rivers Outfitters – they are one of the major rafting companies in Maine and will provide all equipment and trained guides in each boat.

Cost: the cost will be roughly $90/scout– that includes cost of rafting, camping, food. $75/adult (not including food). The Dead River is $20 extra, so roughly $110 (scouts) / $95 (adults). I will need a non-refundable 50% deposit from everyone by mid January so we can pay the deposit to hold our spot.

Waiver: Everyone will need to fill out the obligatory waiver from the outfitter. It can be found here.

Schedule Details:

- We will drive to Bingham, Maine Friday (late afternoon) and camp overnight both Friday and Saturday nights. It is a 4 ½ hour drive to Bingham, so we will need to leave as early as possible after school (hopefully pack up around 3pm and leave no later than 4pm – I need to double check the exact times).

- We will be back at our base camp around 3:30pm (+/- 30 minutes). Folks who need to be back by Sunday morning could drive back Saturday night but it will be a long day (but a very exciting one!).
- For the rest of the folks that return on Sunday, I estimate we will arrive back in Lexington between 1pm and 2:30pm.

Volunteers:

- Adults going on the trip will need to be at the church no later than 3pm on Friday – plan accordingly (put it in your work calendar now!).
- I would love some help planning adult meals; and coordinating drivers.

I will send out a formal flyer/sign up form once I confirm a few more details.

Yours in Scouting,
Tad

Got a call from Meg this afternoon. She said they got to Perkins Island around 2:30 PM with no problems. The Scouts made camp, ate their lunch, and were off fishing, exploring, and doing what Scouts do on trips. The weather has been perfect.

The funny thing is that early reports this morning for Lexington were that we might pick up some heavy rain with wind gusts. We started to get that, but then the weather cleared and it was a fine day.

Quite a change from our last canoe trip to Perkins when it poured all day and all night. Everybody still had a good time, though … as we always do.

-Hank

Hi All:

Sorry for the late notice guys/gals. I have the info on a trip for the base in Maine. After speaking to Dave he recommends the 8 nights as one night/day is spent on orientation. I will bring some packets this Thursday, the trip is restricted to 13yr or older scouts and leaders. All food from arrival to departure is provided, and we can have a total of 11 people. I will need to know ASAP if there is enough interest. The departure dates given to me are as follows June 24th, 25th, 26th and 28th. These are the date we leave Lexington and start the trip. If we have a group all we need to do is pick the arrival date and book it. The Web site is http://www.mainehighadventure.org.

All dates lead into 4th of July weekend — some are before and some are during the weekend.
