The Boston Minuteman Council web page has a serious limitation in its use of URLs (page addresses) — no matter what you click on, the displayed address is always “http://bsaboston.org”. This means that you can’t link directly to a particular resource on the Council webpage, and have to try to provide directions as to what to click and when. It turns out, though, that there’s a workaround:

SHORT VERSION (for people who don’t care how it works)
Click here. The address box will contain a long, funny-looking URL. Any link you subsequently click on the Council site will take you to a similar-looking URL. These are real URLs that take you to a specific page — you can bookmark them, email them, trade them with your friends. UPDATE 9/18/07: This version still works with the new Council webpage.

LONG VERSION (for people who want to know how to do the trick)
1. Open your favorite browser and navigate to the Council website (http://bsaboston.org).

2. In the navigation bar on the left side of the page, locate the “Home” link.

3. RIGHT click on this link, and select “Open in new window” from the context menu that opens. (Or “Open in new tab” for those of you with modern browsers.) UPDATE 9/18/07: When the new Council webpage was put up they seem to have modified the behavior a little. This trick now appears to work with most links on the page, but not with the “Home” page. Poke around a little if you need to.

4. When the new window (or tab) opens, in the address box you’ll see the actual URL of the page: http://www.doubleknot.com/openrosters/view_homepage.asp?orgkey=909

5. Once you’ve gotten to this point, any time you click a link to another page in the BSA Boston site, your address bar will continue to show the actual URL.

A REQUEST. The problem with workarounds is that they may not last — BSA Boston and/or Doubleknot could do something to make this workaround not work. If you have any problem with this workaround, please notify the Troop 160 Webmaster.
